    Description

VINTAGE 10" CEYLON CARVED EBONY ELEPHANT FIGURINE
KANDY, SILVER & GEMSTONES * RARE PIECE
    ORNATELY DECORATED ELEPHANT
Stands 10" tall, and 7" long.  Weighs 3 pounds
This is an antique, Ebony, Silver and Semi-precious Gemstone
Elephant Figurine Statue handmade in Ceylon
    (now Sri Lanka) circa 1900-1940.
This elephant is clothed for the Kandy Perahera Festival
or Festival of the Tooth of Buddha,
    held in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
The highlight of the festival parade is the long line
    of beautifully dressed elephants,
during which the Sacred Tooth relic casket,
holding the tooth of the Buddha,
is placed on the back of the lead elephant.
    When not in the parade,
the tooth of the Buddha is housed in a sacred temple.
Depicting the lead elephant from the parade,
this is carved from a single piece of ebony wood
and is draped with a silver saddle
set with semi-precious gemstones and dangling silver details.
Tusks, eyes and toenails are of bone.
Indian silver does not have the same content and
    regulations as US silver.
